Where should spill kits be located?
Question
Where should spill kits be positioned around a workplace?
Short answer
Spill kits should be placed close to likely spill points, clearly visible, easy to access and protected from damage or weather where necessary. They are commonly positioned near liquid storage, transfer areas, machinery, loading bays, fuel points and external yards.
SERPRO practical guidance
Location planning should follow the site’s realistic spill routes. If a spill could reach a drain, doorway, slope or watercourse before staff can collect a kit, the kit is probably too far away or drain protection is also needed. Each kit should be labelled for its liquid type so staff do not use the wrong absorbents.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not hide spill kits behind stock, inside locked cupboards or in areas that are difficult to reach during an emergency.
