What does the litre capacity of a spill kit actually mean?
Short answer
A spill kit capacity is an approximate absorbency figure, not a guarantee that every spill of that size can be fully handled in every condition. Real performance depends on the liquid, absorbent type, floor surface, weather, access, response time and whether additional items such as socks or drain covers are needed.

The maximum container size, likely spill volume, liquid type, drain risk, location and staff response procedure should all be considered. A site with a 200 litre drum may need more than a 200 litre kit if the spill could spread quickly or reach drains.

Do not select a spill kit by matching litre capacity to container size alone. Containment, speed of response and drainage risk can be just as important.
