How often should spill kits be inspected?

Question

How often should a workplace inspect its spill kits?

Short answer

Spill kits should be inspected regularly enough to make sure they are complete, accessible, dry, correctly labelled and ready to use. Monthly checks are a practical starting point for many workplaces, but higher-risk areas may need more frequent checks after use, deliveries, weather events or site changes.

SERPRO practical guidance

An inspection should record the kit location, seal condition, missing items, damaged packaging, absorbent type, PPE condition, expiry-sensitive items and whether the kit has been used. A simple checklist creates evidence that the site is maintaining response equipment rather than just buying it once.

Common mistake to avoid

Do not wait until a spill to discover that the kit has already been used, moved, contaminated or blocked by stock.
