Which absorbents should I use for coolant?
Question
What type of absorbent should be used for coolant leaks or coolant spills?
Short answer
For many workshop coolant spills, general-purpose or maintenance absorbents are the usual starting point because coolants are often water-based workplace fluids. However, the safety data sheet and site risk assessment should always be checked, especially if additives, biocides, oils or metalworking fluids are involved.
SERPRO practical guidance
Coolant spill planning should consider slip risk, floor staining, nearby drains, machinery location and how contaminated absorbents will be handled after use. Pads are useful for smaller leaks, rolls can protect longer work areas, and socks can stop coolant moving towards walkways or drains.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not assume every coolant is harmless. Some coolant mixtures may contain substances that require COSHH controls or specific waste handling.
