Can used absorbents go in general waste?
Question
Can used absorbent pads, socks or granules be put in general waste?
Short answer
Used absorbents should be disposed of according to what they have absorbed. If they have absorbed oil, fuel, chemicals or hazardous substances, they may need to be classified and handled as controlled or hazardous waste rather than general waste.
SERPRO practical guidance
The absorbent itself is only part of the decision. The liquid it contains, contamination level, safety data sheet, waste code and waste contractor requirements all matter. Keep used absorbents in suitable bags or containers, label them clearly and prevent further leaks while awaiting collection.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not put contaminated absorbents into general waste simply because the spill looked small. Waste classification depends on the substance and hazard, not just the quantity.
