How should used absorbents be stored before disposal?
Question
How should contaminated absorbents be stored after a spill but before waste collection?
Short answer
Used absorbents should be placed in suitable bags, containers or drums that are compatible with the absorbed liquid, clearly labelled and stored where they cannot leak, be damaged, contaminate clean materials or enter drains.
SERPRO practical guidance
The temporary storage method should match the hazard. Oil-contaminated, fuel-contaminated or chemical-contaminated absorbents may need segregation and specialist waste handling. Staff should avoid mixing wastes unless the waste contractor and classification allow it.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not leave contaminated pads or socks loose on the floor, outside in the rain, or in unlabelled sacks where the contents may be forgotten or mishandled.
