Oil-only vs general-purpose absorbents: which should I use?
Question
What is the difference between oil-only and general-purpose absorbents, and which type should a workplace choose?
Short answer
Oil-only absorbents are normally chosen for oils, fuels and other hydrocarbons, especially where water may also be present. General-purpose absorbents are better for everyday non-aggressive workplace fluids such as water-based liquids, coolants and mild oils where selective oil uptake is not required.
SERPRO practical guidance
For most sites the decision should start with the liquid, not the product. If the risk is fuel, diesel, hydraulic oil or oil on standing water, oil-only products are usually the safer starting point. If the area contains mixed general maintenance fluids, general-purpose pads, rolls, socks or kits may be more practical. Where chemicals, acids, alkalis or unknown liquids are involved, check compatibility and consider chemical spill products instead.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not assume one absorbent type is suitable for every liquid on site. A mixed-use workshop, yard or warehouse may need more than one absorbent type and clear labelling so staff use the correct product during a spill.
