SpillTrapper Pit Mat 200

The SpillTrapper® Pit Mat 200 is a heavy-duty, oil-selective absorbent mat designed for use in vehicle inspection pits, maintenance bays and other long working areas beneath plant, machinery and vehicles. Measuring 135 cm × 200 cm, it provides broad floor coverage and absorbs up to 50 litres of oil, diesel, petrol and other compatible hydrocarbon liquids.

Its multi-layer construction combines a durable protective mesh, hydrophobic oil-absorbent layers, a high-capacity recycled-fibre core and a hard-wearing non-slip vinyl backing. This allows the mat to capture oil and fuel leaks while resisting clean rainwater and helping to reduce the risk of contamination reaching the floor or ground beneath.

What Is the SpillTrapper Pit Mat 200?

The SpillTrapper Pit Mat 200 is an elongated absorbent oil mat developed for locations where a conventional square or short rectangular mat does not provide enough coverage. Its 2-metre length makes it particularly suitable for vehicle inspection pits, servicing lanes and maintenance areas where leaks may occur at several points beneath an engine, gearbox, hydraulic system or fuel system.

The mat can also be positioned beneath stationary plant, generators, compressors, pumps, tanks and industrial machinery. It provides a practical alternative where a rigid drip tray would be difficult to install, could obstruct access or might collect unwanted rainwater during outdoor use.

Which Liquids Will the Pit Mat Absorb?

The SpillTrapper Pit Mat 200 is designed to absorb oil, diesel, petrol, hydraulic oil, lubricating oil and other compatible hydrocarbon liquids. Its oil-selective inner layers attract hydrocarbons while resisting the absorption of clean water.

This hydrophobic performance helps preserve the mat’s absorbent capacity when it is used outdoors or in damp working environments. Clean rainwater can pass through or drain away instead of occupying the absorbent core, leaving more capacity available for oil and fuel leakage.

Important: SpillTrapper is an oil-selective product. It should not be assumed to absorb acids, alkalis, oxidising chemicals, coolants, water-based process liquids or unidentified substances. Confirm chemical compatibility before use.

Multi-Layer SpillTrapper Construction

Each layer of the SpillTrapper Pit Mat performs a different role in capturing leakage, protecting the absorbent core and reducing the risk of ground contamination.

Heavy-Duty Protective Mesh

The tough upper mesh protects the internal absorbent material from routine wear while allowing leaking oil and fuel to pass through into the oil-selective layers below. This makes the mat better suited to prolonged positioning beneath machinery than a standard loose absorbent pad.

Hydrophobic Oil-Selective Layer

The hydrophobic absorbent layer is designed to attract oils and fuels while rejecting clean rainwater. This is especially beneficial in outdoor maintenance areas, transport yards and sites where the mat may be exposed to changing weather.

EVO Recycled® Burst-Fibre Core

The absorbent core incorporates recycled burst-fibre technology to provide high oil-retention capacity within the mat. The Pit Mat 200 can absorb up to approximately 50 litres, subject to the viscosity of the liquid and the conditions of use.

Additional Oleophilic Retention Layer

A further oil-attracting layer helps retain absorbed hydrocarbons inside the mat, reducing the potential for pooling and run-off when the product is used and inspected correctly.

Hard-Wearing Non-Slip Vinyl Backing

The durable backing helps contain absorbed liquid and limits direct contact between the contaminant and the surface beneath. It also provides a more stable base when the mat is positioned on a suitable flat working surface.

Where Can the SpillTrapper Pit Mat 200 Be Used?

Its long format makes the Pit Mat 200 suitable for a wide variety of industrial, automotive and plant-maintenance applications, including:

  • Vehicle inspection and maintenance pits
  • Commercial vehicle servicing bays
  • Fleet maintenance workshops
  • Garages and MOT preparation areas
  • Beneath engines, gearboxes and transmissions
  • Under generators, compressors and hydraulic power packs
  • Beneath pumps, tanks and industrial machinery
  • Construction plant maintenance areas
  • Rail, transport and infrastructure maintenance facilities
  • Temporary servicing and repair locations

Why Use a SpillTrapper Mat in an Inspection Pit?

Inspection pits can be difficult to keep clean when vehicles release small amounts of oil or fuel during servicing. Liquid may drip onto the pit floor, spread along the working area and create additional cleaning, slip and environmental risks.

The Pit Mat 200 provides a continuous two-metre absorbent surface that can be positioned beneath the most likely leakage points. This helps capture contaminants close to their source and reduces the need to place numerous individual absorbent pads along the pit.

Unlike loose granules, the mat remains as a single contained product and does not need to be swept from the floor after every minor leak. It can be inspected regularly and replaced when it approaches saturation or becomes damaged.

Benefits of the SpillTrapper Pit Mat 200

  • Long working coverage: The 200 cm length suits inspection pits and maintenance lanes.
  • High absorbency: Captures up to approximately 50 litres of compatible hydrocarbon liquid.
  • Oil-selective: Absorbs oils and fuels while resisting clean rainwater.
  • Durable construction: Tough mesh and reinforced layers protect the absorbent core.
  • Ground protection: The vinyl backing helps reduce contaminant contact with the floor.
  • Reduced loose waste: Provides a contained alternative to loose granules for persistent drips.
  • Flexible positioning: Can be placed beneath different vehicles, plant and machinery.
  • Secure installation: Metal eyelets allow the mat to be secured or suspended where the application permits.
  • British manufacture: Manufactured in the United Kingdom.

How to Position and Use the Pit Mat

  1. Identify the likely oil or fuel leak points beneath the vehicle, machine or item of plant.
  2. Ensure that the floor or pit surface is sufficiently clean, stable and free from sharp objects that could puncture the backing.
  3. Position the mat so that it extends beneath all credible leak points.
  4. Where appropriate, use the metal eyelets to secure the mat and prevent unwanted movement.
  5. Inspect the mat regularly for absorbed liquid, physical damage and signs of saturation.
  6. Replace the mat before it becomes saturated or begins to release retained liquid.
  7. Handle and dispose of the used mat according to the hazards of the liquid absorbed and the site’s waste-management procedure.

Inspection and Replacement

The mat’s 50-litre rating is a maximum laboratory-style absorbency figure and should not be treated as the routine working limit. Replacement frequency will depend on the liquid, leak rate, viscosity, temperature, weather exposure and inspection schedule.

Replace the Pit Mat immediately if it becomes saturated, torn, punctured, delaminated or unable to retain the absorbed contaminant safely.

SpillTrapper Pit Mat or a Rigid Drip Tray?

A rigid drip tray holds free liquid within a raised container and may be preferable where recovered liquid must remain visible or be drained and reused. However, a rigid tray can be awkward to install within a narrow inspection pit and may obstruct movement or access.

The SpillTrapper Pit Mat lies flat and absorbs leakage into its internal structure. It is particularly useful where a low-profile product is needed, where the leakage occurs along an extended area or where exposure to clean rainwater would quickly reduce the useful capacity of an open tray.

The correct choice should be based on the site risk assessment, expected leak volume, inspection frequency and whether free-liquid containment or oil-selective absorption is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is the SpillTrapper Pit Mat 200?

The mat measures approximately 135 cm wide × 200 cm long. Check that the available pit or working area can accommodate the full mat without folding or obstructing access.

How much liquid can the Pit Mat 200 absorb?

It has a stated maximum absorbency of approximately 50 litres per mat. Actual performance will vary according to the liquid, viscosity, temperature and operating conditions.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes. The hydrophobic inner material is designed to resist clean rainwater while absorbing compatible oil and fuel leaks. The mat must still be inspected regularly, particularly after severe weather or heavy leakage.

Can vehicles drive over the SpillTrapper Pit Mat?

The mat should not automatically be treated as a drive-over product. Position it where tyres, tracks, jacks, stands and concentrated equipment loads will not damage the absorbent layers unless the intended installation has been specifically assessed and approved.

Can the mat be reused?

The Pit Mat may remain in position while it has safe absorbent capacity and remains undamaged. It is not designed to be washed out and reused after saturation. Once contaminated, it should be managed according to the liquid absorbed and the applicable waste procedure.

Does the mat neutralise absorbed oil or fuel?

No. It absorbs and retains compatible hydrocarbons but does not neutralise them. A used mat may remain flammable, environmentally hazardous or harmful and must be handled accordingly.
