Chemical vs maintenance spill kits: which should I choose?
Question
What is the difference between a chemical spill kit and a maintenance spill kit?
Short answer
A maintenance spill kit is generally intended for non-aggressive everyday fluids such as oils, coolants and water-based workplace liquids. A chemical spill kit is intended for a wider range of hazardous liquids, but suitability still depends on chemical compatibility and the site risk assessment.
SERPRO practical guidance
Choose the kit by identifying the liquids stored, handled or transported in the area. If acids, alkalis, solvents, oxidisers or unknown hazardous substances may be present, chemical absorbents and suitable PPE are normally more appropriate than a standard maintenance kit. COSHH assessments and safety data sheets should be used to decide the correct response equipment.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not buy a chemical kit as a universal answer without checking compatibility. Some chemicals need specific neutralisers, specialist PPE, isolation procedures or emergency support.
